PORT STEPHENS COMMUNITY CARE
CARERS DAY 2009
What a great day we had on our 2009 Carers Day. Plenty of information for our carers, a little pampering, entertainment and lots of excellent food. MP Craig Baumann even found time to call in for a chat with some carers.
The carers also had some useful information from our speaker, Dietician Sharon Lawrence that was easy to follow and showed us how to maintain a healthier diet and lifestyle. This, combined with the exercise classes demonstrated by Samantha from the YMCA could keep us all healthy into our old age.
Kel Connell also entertained us all with his particular brand of humour, combined with his very talented art. Altogether an enjoyable day was had by all!!!
MEALS ON WHEELS DAY
29.8.09
This year Port Stephens Community Care celebrated Meals on Wheels Day by acknowledging thirty years of meals on wheels in the Raymond Terrace district. The first record of minutes reads that the Inaugural Meeting was held at Port Stephens Shire Council Committee room at 10am on Tuesday, 13th February, 1979. The purpose of this meeting was to establish a Meals on Wheels Service Committee and Volunteer Group. It was decided that the preparation base for the meals would be the Tomago Women’s Detention Centre, with the preparation of the meals to be the responsibility of the women at the centre. It was further resolved to form a committee to manage a Meals on Wheels Service to be known as ‘Raymond Terrace District Meals on Wheels’.Port Stephens Community Care, of course, now services the whole of Port Stephens Meals on Wheels, but cannot fail to recognise the sacrifice and work of these pioneers of the service.
We are also fortunate to STILL have some of the original volunteers working (still in a volunteer capacity) for us today, including Pat Burke and Joan Muir.On Friday 29.8.09, we celebrated the initiative of those people from thirty years ago and held a morning tea at our Activity Centre in the Port Stephens Community Care Centre in Raymond Terrace. The food was outstanding (prepared by our Meals on Wheels staff and our cook, David Donnelly), and we had many volunteer guests. Craig Baumann MP and Bob Baldwin MP both attended the festivities, as did our Mayor, Bruce MacKenzie.
As an interesting aside, Mr MacKenzie was also one of the original volunteers for Meals on Wheels. Sue Conroy, General Manager of the Raymond Terrace Bowling Club was also an honoured guest and presented a cheque as a donation to our own General Manager Sheryl Cain. A very happy morning, and a timely reminder of why Port Stephens Community Care exists and exactly who we are here to serve.
NAIDOC WEEK CELEBRATIONS
This year, the NAIDOC celebrations were split between two venues. The Aboriginal Smoking Ceremony was held at the Port Stephens Council Chambers, and this was followed by the (now) traditional march down William Street to the Riverside Park. At the park the Rainbow Serpent Sculpture was launched and for those of you who haven’t seen it yet, it’s worth the trip to the park to have a look. Because of the inclement weather, the latter part of the day was moved from the park, out to the Marook Centre at 2163 Nelson Bay Road, Williamtown, where the stalls were set up and the games and rides for the kids were held. There was also plenty of entertainment for the adults and the Lions Club prepared a sausage sizzle. There was also plenty of bush tucker to sample (crocodile does not taste like chicken—in fact it has a distinct flavour all its own), supplied by the Djapa Café. For those of you who would like to sample some bush tucker, just drop in to the café for a meal, or even for a coffee and just sit and admire the surroundings. It’s just down the road from the Airport. It was a good day with plenty to do and see, both at Raymond Terrace and Williamtown. It is to be hoped that the weather next year is a little kinder and that the venue won’t need to be split again.
AUSTRALIA'S BIGGEST MORNING TEA
28th MAY 2009
Our Biggest Morning Tea was held in the Activity Centre at the old Retravision building. All of the money raised was sent to the Cancer Council and they were most grateful.
The food was delicious and we thank the local businesses for their donations.
Great Food, exceptional company and wonderful speeches characterised both of our volunteer luncheons in May. Certificates of five and ten years volunteer service were handed out and we thank ALL of our volunteers for their dedication.

51st ANNIVERSARY SENIORS
Senior's Expo 2009
What a great day! There were so many happy faces at the Lemon Tree Passage Bowling Club on the 20th March that it was a pleasure to be amongst them. Hon Craig Baumann MP came along and enjoyed the day and the interaction with the local seniors.
The Stallholders were all very happy with the turnout and the visitors were very pleased with the stallholders' friendly and helpful attitudes.

Port Stephens Council’s Crime Wise stand proved very popular, and they’ll certainly know to bring more information packages next year, because from what I hear, they were cleared out within the first couple of hours. There were over thirty stands in all and everyone of them seemed to be surrounded by a crowd at one time or another.Lemon Tree Passage Bowling Club Bistro turned on a quality meal for the seniors lunches. It was delicious! Our Master of Ceremonies, Mr Peter Francis, put on his usual stellar performance and was busy introducing all of our guests and stall holders. The Black Pearl Dancers were very talented and followed the Welcome to Country by Mr John Ridgeway very effectively.
Special mention to the Newcastle Theatre Company. It really was a case of ’laugh til you cry’. Dame Edna, Sir Les Patterson, all of the characters and all of the skits were outstanding. Well done everyone!
Watch out for next year everyone—it’s going to be bigger and better than ever.
SAND CASTLE ACTIVITY CENTRE
OPEN DAY
An Open Day was held at the Raymond Terrace Community Centre (home to Sand Castle Activity Centre), on the 17th September, 2008.
The Lions Club Supplied a delicious lunch and there were many craft items sold on the day.
This was a wonderful opportunity for the public to see what Port Stephens Community Cate has accomplished for the elderly of Port Stephens, and many people took advantage of the day to just drop in and have a look around. The centre is open five days per week with something different happening every day.
There are also outings arranged for the clients. A calendar of activities is prepared every three months and a copy can be accessed from this web site.
